Frederick Schiller Faust, known as Max Brand, was a prolific American author of Westerns and creator of Dr. Kildare.

Frederick Schiller Faust, writing under the popular pseudonym Max Brand, was a highly productive American author, primarily recognized for his Western fiction. Beyond his Westerns, Brand achieved significant success by creating the character of Dr. James Kildare, a young medical intern. This character's popularity extended far beyond the initial pulp fiction stories, leading to adaptations in numerous other media, including feature films, radio dramas, television series, and comic books, solidifying Kildare's place in popular culture over many decades.

Faust utilized a variety of other pseudonyms throughout his career, such as George Owen Baxter, Evan Evans, and Peter Dawson, alongside writing under his birth name. Under the name George Challis, he penned the "Tizzo the Firebrand" series for Argosy magazine, which featured historical swashbuckling tales set in Renaissance Italy. Faust's life was cut short when he was mortally wounded by shrapnel in Italy in 1944 while serving as a war correspondent for Harper's Magazine, an assignment he pursued to experience combat firsthand for a potential war novel.

War Correspondent and Death

In early 1944, Frederick Schiller Faust's desire to experience war firsthand for a potential novel led him to pursue an assignment as a war correspondent. This ambition was facilitated by Colonel Nee, a technical advisor, who arranged for Faust to be attached to a company of American soldiers fighting in Italy for Harper's Magazine. While accompanying these troops during their campaign in Italy, Faust tragically sustained fatal wounds from shrapnel. His death occurred in May 1944, shortly before his 52nd birthday, cutting short a career marked by immense creativity and a diverse range of literary contributions.
