The history of women in literature spans millennia, with significant contributions from early civilizations to the modern day. Ancient figures like Enheduanna in Sumeria and Sappho in Greece are recognized for their pioneering poetic works. The tradition continued through medieval and Renaissance periods with writers such as Murasaki Shikibu, Christine de Pizan, and Gulbadan Begum, who produced influential narratives and historical accounts.

Later centuries saw a rise in female novelists and poets, including Ann Radcliffe and Jane Austen in the gothic and romantic traditions. The 19th and 20th centuries witnessed an expansion of women's literary voices across diverse genres and cultural backgrounds, including Western American and Black American women writers. The text also lists women awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, underscoring their global impact and recognition.

Women have been active in textual communication since the dawn of civilization. Enheduanna, a Sumerian High Priestess over 4,200 years ago, is credited as the earliest known author and poet, with her works including personal devotions and hymns. In archaic Greece, Sappho of Lesbos was renowned for her lyric poetry, intended for musical accompaniment, though much of her work is now lost. Later, during the Sangam period in Tamil literature, the poet Avvaiyar is attributed with numerous verses and is noted for her travels and compositions reflecting the lives of common people and courtly matters.

The medieval period saw notable female authors such as Murasaki Shikibu, a Japanese noblewoman whose early 11th-century work, The Tale of Genji, is considered by some to be the first novel. In 15th-century France, Christine de Pizan authored the Book of the City of Ladies, an allegorical defense of women. During the same century, Julian of Norwich penned Revelations of Divine Love, the first known book in English by a woman. The 16th century featured Gulbadan Begum, daughter of Mughal Emperor Babur, who wrote a biography of her brother.

The 18th and 19th centuries marked a significant increase in recognized female writers. Ann Radcliffe became known for her gothic fiction, with novels like The Mysteries of Udolpho. Jane Austen achieved widespread success with her novels of manners, including Pride and Prejudice and Emma. The 19th century also saw a broader spectrum of female contributors, including illustrators, painters, and poets like Kate Greenaway, as well as writers from various European and international backgrounds.

The literary landscape continued to diversify with distinct movements like Western American women writers and Black women writers in the United States gaining recognition. The 20th century witnessed a prolific output from women across all genres. The enduring impact of women in literature is further acknowledged by the list of Nobel Prize in Literature laureates, including figures such as Selma Lagerlöf, Toni Morrison, and Alice Munro, reflecting their profound and lasting contributions to global literary heritage.
