Mather, Cotton

Cotton Mather was a prominent Puritan clergyman and prolific author in colonial New England, born in 1663 into a distinguished ministerial family. After graduating from Harvard College, he served as a minister at Boston's Old North Meeting House for his entire career. Mather was a significant intellectual figure who participated in the 1689 revolt against colonial governor Sir Edmund Andros. He later became involved in the controversial Salem witch trials, defending his actions in his book "Wonders of the Invisible World."

Mather's intellectual pursuits extended to science, where he researched plant hybridization and promoted inoculation against smallpox, a practice he learned from an enslaved African named Onesimus. His advocacy for inoculation led to significant controversy in Boston. Despite his intellectual contributions and correspondence with European scholars, including receiving an honorary doctorate from the University of Glasgow, Mather faced personal and professional challenges, including a strained relationship with his father and unsuccessful attempts to lead Harvard College. He died in 1728, leaving behind a vast body of work.

A proponent of experimental science, Cotton Mather engaged in original research, including studies on plant hybridization. He was particularly instrumental in promoting the practice of variolation for smallpox prevention, a technique he learned from an enslaved man named Onesimus. Mather communicated his scientific findings to the Royal Society of London, which elected him a fellow. However, his advocacy for inoculation generated considerable public opposition and controversy in Boston during the 1721 outbreak. Despite these challenges, his writings, such as "Bonifacius, or Essays to Do Good," influenced prominent figures like Benjamin Franklin.

Mather's involvement in the Salem witch trials of 1692–1693 remains a significant aspect of his legacy. He defended his role and the proceedings in his publication "Wonders of the Invisible World." While his contemporary actions were intended to address perceived supernatural threats, this aspect of his work has profoundly impacted his historical reputation, leading to considerable controversy both in his time and in subsequent evaluations of his career. His historical writings, particularly "Magnalia Christi Americana," are noted for their account of colonial New England.
