Namioka pursued higher education in mathematics, attending Radcliffe College and the University of California, Berkeley. It was at Berkeley that she met and married Isaac Namioka, a fellow graduate student from Japan. She holds both a bachelor's and a master's degree in mathematics.

Her unique given name, "Lensey," is notable as it has no corresponding Chinese characters. Her father, a linguist, created the name from unused Chinese syllables.
