This interaction has led to the development of numerous movements, reinterpretations, and hybrid spiritual forms, influencing both Western and Eastern thought.

The academic field of Western esotericism emerged partly as a critical response to earlier universalist interpretations of these East-West dialogues. Scholars now aim to distinguish historical scholarship from the syncretic narratives of modern spiritual movements, analyzing the intercultural processes and transformations involved in the appropriation and reinterpretation of Asian religious concepts within Western esoteric frameworks. This approach emphasizes historical accuracy and critical analysis over metaphysical unity.

Western esotericism, in academic study, refers to a diverse array of Western thought currents traditionally classified as "rejected knowledge." It encompasses traditions like Hermeticism, Neoplatonism, Kabbalah, alchemy, Rosicrucianism, occultism, and theosophy, characterized by features such as correspondences, living nature, imagination, transmutation, and the pursuit of gnosis. In contrast, "Eastern religions" denotes traditions originating in Asia, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, Sikhism, Taoism, Confucianism, and Chinese folk religion. Within the context of Western esotericism, this term often highlights specific aspects of Asian thought, such as Vedanta, Yoga, Tantra, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen Buddhism, and Taoist alchemy, that have been adopted and reinterpreted in the West. The distinction between Orientalism, a discourse of representation, and Eastern spirituality, the actual reception of Asian practices, is crucial for understanding this interaction.

Early scholarly approaches to the East-West religious exchange, prevalent in the 19th and early 20th centuries, often employed universalist or "perennialist" models, suggesting a shared underlying truth across all religions. Figures like H. P. Blavatsky and Aldous Huxley contributed to this view, which tended to merge historical distinctions in favor of a metaphysical unity. Later historical scholarship, however, developed as a critical counterpoint to these approaches. The academic field of Western esotericism was formalized through typological models, such as Antoine Faivre's, which emphasized recurrent structural features rather than metaphysical claims. This "empirical-historical" approach, further developed by scholars like Wouter J. Hanegraaff, views esotericism as a distinct historical phenomenon within Western culture. The establishment of academic chairs and research institutions solidified Western esotericism as an autonomous field, enabling more nuanced analyses of intercultural exchanges.

The academic study of Western esotericism evolved to analyze how esoteric currents historically integrated and transformed Asian religious concepts, moving away from earlier notions of metaphysical synthesis. This shift is informed by older European "ancient wisdom" narratives, such as "Platonic Orientalism," which posited that ancient philosophies like Platonism contained a primordial wisdom originating from the East. This perspective allowed 19th-century esoteric writers to present Eastern materials as corroborations of a universal truth, often translated into familiar Western esoteric language. The systematic historical study of Western esotericism, emerging in the late 20th century, sought to differentiate itself from these trans-historical "wisdom tradition" interpretations by focusing on specific historical contexts and intellectual developments.

From the mid-18th century, a specific intellectual climate in Europe fostered receptivity to Eastern concepts of subtle bodies and energetic cosmologies. This period saw the rise of vitalist biology, which emphasized organismic life and formative forces, countering mechanistic views of nature. Simultaneously, new experimental methods began to "medicalize the supernatural," examining phenomena like trance and clairvoyance within a clinical framework. These developments provided a context for reinterpreting existing Western motifs, such as those found in Hermeticism and Neoplatonism, related to subtle embodiment. These fragmented traditions were consolidated into what became known as a Western "astral cosmology" and "astral anatomy," employing a new vocabulary to describe subtle vehicles.
