Lee Lozowick was an American spiritual teacher and author who presented himself as a representative of the Western Baul tradition.

Lee Lozowick (1943-2010) was an American spiritual teacher, author, and poet from Arizona. He authored over forty books on spiritual practice and parenting, many of which were translated into several languages. Lozowick identified with the Western Baul tradition and founded the Hohm community, which included ashrams in Arizona, France, and India, as well as Hohm Press. His teachings focused on guru yoga, and he was known for incorporating elements of the Baul tradition and George Gurdjieff's work into his philosophy. He also had a significant connection with Yogi Ramsuratkumar, becoming his disciple and dedicating devotional poetry to him. Lozowick's community members followed a lacto-vegetarian diet and abstained from alcohol and tobacco.

Lozowick's spiritual journey began with Silva Mind Control and the Human Potential Movement in the early 1970s. After an awakening experience in 1975, he traveled to India in 1977, where he met Yogi Ramsuratkumar. He later moved his Hohm community to Arizona in 1980. Lozowick's public persona sometimes involved discouraging potential students through provocative content or behavior, which he described as a method to filter out superficial interest. He maintained friendships and collaborations with other spiritual teachers throughout his life. His work continues through his disciples who have received permission to teach in his lineage.

Spiritual Path and Influences

Lee Lozowick's spiritual journey commenced in 1970 with Silva Mind Control and an engagement with the Human Potential Movement. A significant awakening experience in 1975 marked a turning point. He later traveled to India in 1977, where he encountered Yogi Ramsuratkumar. Lozowick became Ramsuratkumar's disciple, attributing his spiritual shift to the mystic, though his sense of connection deepened in the 1980s. Lozowick also wrote extensively on his devotion to Ramsuratkumar. He later aligned himself with the Baul tradition of Bengal, suggesting a potential, though unconfirmed, link between Ramsuratkumar and this lineage. Lozowick's teachings emphasized guru yoga and drew inspiration from figures like Chogyam Trungpa. His approach to attracting students sometimes involved challenging public presentations, seen as a filter for genuine seekers.

Hohm Community and Philosophy

In New Jersey, Lozowick established the spiritual community known as Hohm, which later relocated to Arizona in 1980. This community encompassed the Hohm Sahaj Mandir and the Hohm Community, along with three ashrams in Arizona, France, and India. Hohm Press was founded to publish works on various spiritual and philosophical topics, including Lozowick's own writings. The community's philosophy incorporated elements of the Baul tradition and George I. Gurdjieff's teachings, particularly concerning the soul and chakra systems. Members adhered to a lacto-vegetarian diet and abstained from alcohol and tobacco. Music played a role in their spiritual practices, with some members involved in blues and rock bands.
