Kristin Cashore

Kristin Cashore, born in 1976, is an American author recognized for her contributions to young adult fantasy literature. She grew up in rural Pennsylvania and pursued higher education, earning a bachelor's degree from Williams College and a master's degree in Children's Literature from Simmons College in 2003. Before her writing career, she held various jobs, including editorial and legal assistant roles, and has mentioned writing her novels by hand.

Cashore's literary career began with the publication of her debut novel, Graceling, in 2008. This book garnered award nominations and critical recognition. She followed this with Fire, a companion novel, and Bitterblue, further developing the Graceling Realm. By 2017, the series had achieved significant international success, selling over 1.5 million copies and being translated into 33 languages. Cashore has also explored standalone narratives, such as Jane, Unlimited, which diverged from the established series by incorporating multiple genres. She has continued to expand the Graceling Realm with titles like Winterkeep and Seasparrow, and her most recent work, There Is a Door in this Darkness, was released in 2024. Her academic journey led her to Williams College, where she obtained a bachelor's degree. She further specialized in her field by completing a master's degree in Children's Literature from Simmons College in 2003. Prior to establishing herself as an author, Cashore engaged in a variety of professions, including work as a dog runner, a candy factory packer, an editorial assistant, a legal assistant, and a freelance writer. Notably, she has stated that she composes her novels by hand.

Cashore's literary career commenced with the release of her first novel, Graceling, in October 2008. This debut was recognized with nominations for the Andre Norton and William C. Morris awards and was listed among Publishers Weekly's Best Books of the Year for 2008. Her subsequent work, Fire, published in October 2009, serves as a companion to Graceling. The third installment in the series, Bitterblue, arrived in May 2012. By 2017, the Graceling Realm series had achieved substantial global reach, with sales exceeding 1.5 million copies and translations into 33 languages. Cashore expanded her work beyond the series with Jane, Unlimited in September 2017, a novel that ventured into different genres. She later returned to the Graceling Realm with Winterkeep in January 2021, followed by Seasparrow in November 2022, marking the fifth book in the series. Her latest publication, There Is a Door in this Darkness, was released in June 2024.
