Westley Watende Omari Moore, born in 1978, is an American politician, author, and former U.S. Army officer who currently serves as the 63rd governor of Maryland. He was raised in New York after his father's early death and attended Johns Hopkins University, later earning a master's degree from Oxford as a Rhodes Scholar. Moore served in the U.S. Army, including a deployment to Afghanistan, and worked as an investment banker. He has authored several books, including "The Other Wes Moore," and led the Robin Hood Foundation. In 2022, he was elected governor of Maryland, making history as the state's first Black governor.
Early Life and Education
Born in Maryland in 1978, Wes Moore spent his formative years in New York after his father's death when Moore was three. He attended Valley Forge Military Academy and College, graduating with an associate degree before pursuing higher education at Johns Hopkins University. There, he earned a bachelor's degree in international relations and economics. His academic pursuits continued at Wolfson College, Oxford, where he studied as a Rhodes Scholar, obtaining a master's degree in international relations.
Military and Business Career
Moore's career includes service in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve, where he attained the rank of captain and was deployed to Afghanistan. Following his military service, he transitioned into the financial sector, working as an investment banker. He also founded a television production company and later established BridgeEdU, an organization focused on supporting students transitioning to college. Moore served as CEO of the Robin Hood Foundation, a non-profit dedicated to poverty alleviation in New York City, from 2017 to 2021.
