The house sparrow (Passer domesticus) is a small, ubiquitous bird found across the globe, deeply integrated with human environments, both urban and rural. It belongs to the sparrow family and is one of approximately 25 species within the genus Passer. Its adaptability allows it to thrive in diverse climates, though it typically avoids extreme wilderness. The bird's diet is opportunistic, encompassing seeds, grains, and invertebrates like insects.

Culturally, the house sparrow holds significant prominence due to its numbers and constant presence alongside humans. It is often viewed as an agricultural pest, though also kept as a pet and historically used as a food source. Symbolically, it has represented commonness, vulgarity, lust, and sexual potency. While widespread, its populations have seen declines in certain areas, yet its conservation status remains 'least concern'. The species exhibits distinct sexual dimorphism in plumage and vocalizations, with males displaying brighter markings and more complex calls.

The house sparrow is a compact bird, typically measuring around 16 cm in length with a wingspan of 19-25 cm and a mass between 24-39.5 grams. Males and females display noticeable differences in appearance, with males possessing more vibrant black, white, and brown markings, especially during the breeding season, while females are generally a paler brown and grey. The bird's stout, conical bill is an adaptation for its seed-eating habits. There are twelve recognized subspecies, divided into two main groups, the Palaearctic (P. d. domesticus) and Oriental (P. d. indicus), which differ in cheek coloration and other subtle features. Body size can vary based on latitude, climate, and season, with larger birds generally found in colder regions, consistent with Bergmann's rule.

The vocalizations of the house sparrow are primarily variations of a frequent, short chirp, used for contact, territory proclamation, and mating calls. Males can produce a more repetitive and emphatic version, sometimes described as an 'ecstatic call'. Aggressive interactions or dominance displays are signaled by a trilled call, also used by females. Alarm and distress calls are distinct, as is a soft 'appeasement call' used within mated pairs. These calls, while varied, share commonalities with other sparrow species. Culturally, the house sparrow is a prominent figure, symbolizing commonness, vulgarity, and fertility, and has been both persecuted as a pest and cherished as a pet.

Strongly associated with human habitation, the house sparrow thrives in both urban and rural settings, demonstrating remarkable adaptability to various climates and habitats. It generally avoids deep forests, open grasslands, and remote deserts, preferring areas influenced by human development. Its diet consists mainly of seeds and grains, supplemented by opportunistic feeding on insects and other invertebrates. This close relationship with humans has made it one of the most widely distributed wild birds globally, often introduced intentionally or accidentally to new regions. Despite its abundance, population declines have been noted in some areas, though its overall conservation status is listed as least concern.
