Dwight Bennett Newton, who also wrote under several pen names including Dwight Bennett and Clement Hardin, was an American author primarily known for his Western fiction. He began his writing career by submitting short stories to Western magazines while pursuing a history degree at the University of Missouri at Kansas City. After serving in the Army Corps of Engineers, Newton settled in Bend, Oregon, and established himself as a prolific writer, publishing 74 novels. One of his novels, 'Range Boss,' achieved a significant milestone by being the first work of fiction released directly in paperback without a prior hardcover edition.

Newton was a founding member of the Western Writers of America, serving as its first secretary-treasurer and on its board for a decade. In the late 1950s, he transitioned to television, working as a writer and story consultant for popular shows such as 'Wagon Train' and 'Tales of Wells Fargo.' He later returned to Bend and engaged in teaching fiction writing at Central Oregon Community College and a summer school. Newton passed away at the age of 97 in Bend, Oregon.
