WWE, a major professional wrestling promotion, evolved from the Capitol Wrestling Corporation founded in 1953, undergoing name changes and corporate shifts.

The entity now known as WWE began as the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC) on January 7, 1953. Over the decades, it rebranded multiple times, becoming the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) in 1963, then the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) in 1979, and finally World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002. The company has since simplified its branding to just WWE. In a significant corporate change in September 2023, WWE merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) under a new parent company, TKO Group Holdings, though both continue to operate as distinct divisions. WWE is recognized as the world's largest professional wrestling promotion, known for its prominent wrestlers, compelling narratives, and memorable events. It broadcasts popular shows like Raw and SmackDown globally and hosts numerous live events and major pay-per-view shows annually, including its flagship event, WrestleMania. In 2014, WWE launched its own 24/7 streaming service, the WWE Network, which eventually included its extensive video archive.

Origins and Early Development

The foundation of what is now WWE was laid on January 7, 1953, with the establishment of the Capitol Wrestling Corporation (CWC). The exact founder remains a subject of some historical debate, with Vincent J. McMahon and his father, Roderick James "Jess" McMahon, both cited. The CWC operated within the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA) framework. Initially, the NWA favored "shooters" as champions to lend credibility to the sport. However, a shift occurred in 1961 when the NWA decided to feature "Nature Boy" Buddy Rogers, a more flamboyant performer, as champion. This decision, coupled with the CWC's preference for keeping Rogers in their Northeast territory and Rogers' reluctance to forfeit a significant deposit for the championship belt, led to a dispute. Rogers ultimately lost the NWA World Heavyweight Championship to Lou Thesz in January 1963. In protest, the CWC, led by Mondt and McMahon, departed the NWA and established the World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF).

The Rise of the WWWF and Bruno Sammartino

The World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) officially formed on January 24, 1963. Buddy Rogers was initially awarded the newly created WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, though he lost it shortly after to Bruno Sammartino on May 17, 1963. This match was brief, reportedly due to Rogers suffering a heart attack. Sammartino's reign as champion was exceptionally long, lasting over seven years, establishing a record for the longest continuous world championship in men's wrestling history. During the 1970s, the WWWF gained prominence by hosting major events at venues like Madison Square Garden and Shea Stadium, primarily in the Northeast. The promotion utilized popular managers to build rivalries for Sammartino and other champions. A distinction was made between "babyface" (fan favorite) champions, who often held titles for extended periods, and "heel" (villainous) champions, who typically served as transitional figures, holding the championship for shorter durations to facilitate title changes.

Expansion and Transformation into WWF

In 1979, the World Wide Wrestling Federation was renamed the World Wrestling Federation (WWF) for marketing reasons. A pivotal moment occurred in 1982 when Vincent K. McMahon, son of Vincent J. McMahon, purchased Capitol Sports, the parent company of the WWF. Driven by a vision to establish the WWF as the premier wrestling promotion globally, McMahon initiated an aggressive expansion strategy. This involved breaking away from the traditional regional "fiefdoms" of wrestling promotions and securing television deals across the United States. The company utilized revenue from advertising, television, and tape sales to acquire talent from rival promoters. This national expansion strategy, which saw the WWF withdraw from the NWA, aimed to surpass established promotions like the American Wrestling Association (AWA) and NWA territories in size and influence.

The Golden Era and National Dominance

Vincent K. McMahon's ambition for the WWF began to materialize with the signing of Hulk Hogan in 1984. Hogan's popularity, amplified by his role in "Rocky III," became a cornerstone of the WWF's "Golden Era." The promotion further bolstered its roster by signing other notable wrestlers such as Rowdy Roddy Piper, Jesse "The Body" Ventura, Big John Studd, André the Giant, Jimmy "Superfly" Snuka, and many others. This period saw the WWF transition from a regional entity to a nationally recognized entertainment powerhouse. The company's strategy focused on creating compelling characters and storylines, leveraging television and live events to build a massive fanbase and establish itself as the dominant force in professional wrestling.

Notable Quotes

“In the old days, there were wrestling fiefdoms all over the country, each with its own little lord in charge. Each little lord respected the rights of his neighboring little lord. No takeovers or raids were allowed. There were maybe 30 of these tiny kingdoms in the U.S. and if I hadn't bought out my dad, there would still be 30 of them, fragmented and struggling. I, of course, had no allegiance to those little lords.”
