Born in 1923, John Marco Allegro's academic path included service in the Royal Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he initially trained for the Methodist ministry but found his true passion in ancient languages. He pursued Oriental Studies at Manchester University, earning his degrees and later undertaking further research in Hebrew dialects at Oxford. His academic journey led him to be invited to join the international team of scholars working on the Dead Sea Scrolls in Jerusalem in 1953, a pivotal moment that shaped his career.

Allegro became a prominent figure in the study of the Dead Sea Scrolls, contributing significantly to their translation and popularization. He was instrumental in the physical opening and initial translation of the Copper Scroll, controversially publishing his findings before the official edition. Allegro's career took a controversial turn with his increasingly unorthodox interpretations of the scrolls' content. He proposed theories suggesting that Christianity originated from an Essene shamanistic cult that utilized psychoactive mushrooms, and that the New Testament was a coded record of these practices. His most notable work advancing these ideas was 'The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross.' These theories were widely rejected by the academic community, leading to significant criticism and impacting his professional standing.
