John Anthony McGuckin

John Anthony McGuckin, born in 1952, is a British theologian, church historian, Eastern Orthodox priest, and poet. He has a comprehensive academic background, holding degrees from institutions like the University of London, Durham University, and the University of Southampton. His scholarly career includes significant positions such as Reader in Patristic and Byzantine theology at the University of Leeds and Professor at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University. He is an archpriest in the Romanian Orthodox Church and has held academic posts at Oxford University. McGuckin's research and writing focus on early Christian history, patristics, New Testament interpretation, Byzantine history, and Orthodox theology. He is recognized for his scholarship in Eastern Christian history and has received several awards for his contributions to education and the church.

McGuckin's extensive academic career spans several prestigious institutions. He has served as a Reader in Patristic and Byzantine theology at the University of Leeds and held professorial roles at Union Theological Seminary and Columbia University as the Nielsen Professor of Early Church History and Professor of Byzantine Christian Studies, respectively. Currently, he is a faculty member in church history at Oxford University. In addition to his academic pursuits, McGuckin is an archpriest within the Romanian Orthodox Church and leads the Orthodox Church in Lytham St. Annes, England. He is also a fellow of the Royal Historical Society and the Royal Society of Arts, underscoring his recognition within both academic and cultural spheres.

McGuckin is particularly known for his writings on significant Church Fathers such as Cyril of Alexandria, Gregory of Nazianzus, and Origen. In 1992, he was honored with the Brotherhood of Peter Mohyla award for his educational contributions in Ukraine. He has been recognized by the Romanian Orthodox Church, receiving the Jeweled Cross of Moldavia and Bukovina from Patriarch Daniel in 2007. Further recognition came in 2014 with the Jeweled Cross from Metropolitan Tikhon of Washington. He also received an honorary Doctorate of Divinity from St. Vladimir's Seminary in 2014 and an honorary doctorate from Sibiu's Lucian Blaga University in 2015.
