Prior to her writing career, Cannon worked as a graphic artist for the Carlsbad public library for over a decade, from 1981 to 1993.

Her debut book, Stellaluna, published in 1993, tells the story of a baby fruit bat and has achieved significant recognition. It has been featured on lists of the 100 best children's books by organizations like the National Education Association and School Library Journal.
