Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a significant country located in Central and Western Europe, bordered by eight other nations and the North and Baltic Seas to the north, with the Alps to the south. It is the most populous member of the European Union, with over 82 million inhabitants across its sixteen states. The nation's history stretches back to the Lower Paleolithic era, with various tribes inhabiting the region. The Romans referred to the area as Germania. Key historical developments include the formation of the Holy Roman Empire in 962, the Protestant Reformation in the 16th century, and the unification into the German Empire in 1871. Following periods of revolution and war, including World War II and the Holocaust, Germany was divided into East and West Germany before reunification in 1990. Today, it is a developed country with a strong economy, a major global exporter and importer, and a significant player in international affairs.

The territory of modern Germany has been inhabited since at least the Lower Paleolithic period, with evidence of early humans and Neanderthals found in regions like the Neander Valley. Later, various tribes, including Celts and Germanic peoples, occupied the land. The Romans, beginning with Julius Caesar, referred to the area east of the Rhine as Germania. By 100 AD, Germanic tribes had established themselves along the Rhine and Danube rivers, forming the Limes Germanicus, though parts of modern Germany were incorporated into Roman provinces. Following the decline of the Roman Empire, Germanic tribes like the Franks migrated and established kingdoms, while Western Slavic tribes inhabited eastern areas.

The Kingdom of Germany became a central part of the Holy Roman Empire in 962. This empire evolved, with significant developments like the Protestant Reformation originating in northern German regions during the 16th century. Johannes Gutenberg's introduction of movable-type printing also played a crucial role in the dissemination of knowledge. The region experienced devastation from religious conflicts, including the Thirty Years' War. After the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806 and the subsequent Napoleonic Wars, the German Confederation was formed. Led by Prussia, the unification of various German states culminated in the establishment of the German Empire in 1871.

The German Empire transitioned into the Weimar Republic after World War I. The rise of Nazism in 1933 led to a totalitarian dictatorship, World War II, and the Holocaust. Post-war, Germany was divided into the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) and the German Democratic Republic (East Germany). The Federal Republic became a founding member of the European Economic Community. Following the fall of communism in East Germany, the country reunified on October 3, 1990. Germany is now a developed nation with Europe's largest economy, a major global exporter and importer, and a recognized great power participating in numerous international organizations.
