He is the grandson of the renowned Scottish novelist and diplomat John Buchan, 1st Baron Tweedsmuir, and the son of William Buchan, 3rd Baron Tweedsmuir. Buchan received his education at Eton and Magdalen College, Oxford. His early career was spent as a correspondent for the Financial Times, reporting from various international locations including the Middle East, Germany, and the United States. He married Lady Evelyn Rose Phipps in 1986, who passed away in 2018. The couple had three children, and Buchan currently resides in Norfolk, England. In recognition of his literary contributions, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature in 2001.
