Gertrude the Great

Gertrude the Great, born in 1256, was a prominent German Benedictine nun and mystic associated with the Monastery of Helfta. Though a Benedictine, her monastery had strong ties to the Cistercian Order. She entered the monastic school at a young age, receiving a comprehensive education in scripture, theology, and classical writers. Her life took a spiritual turn around age 25 when she began experiencing visions, shifting her focus from secular studies to prayer, meditation, and writing.

Her mystical experiences led her to embrace a spirituality known as "nuptial mysticism," viewing herself and others as Brides of Christ. Gertrude is recognized as one of the significant mystics of the 13th century. She died around 1302. Her writings, particularly "The Herald of Divine Love," detail her spiritual insights and visions, including a notable devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her works gained prominence and influence over centuries, impacting various religious orders and theologians.

Gertrude's life was profoundly shaped by her mystical experiences, beginning around 1281. These visions redirected her intellectual pursuits from secular knowledge towards scripture and theology. She dedicated herself to intense prayer and meditation, leading her to write spiritual treatises. A key aspect of her mystical practice, shared with her teacher Mechtilde, was "nuptial mysticism," a concept where they perceived themselves as espoused to Christ. Her literary output includes "The Herald of Divine Love," a significant work detailing her visions and spiritual insights, though parts of it were compiled by other nuns. She also authored "Spiritual Exercises," and while "Gertrudian Prayers" is a later collection, it is attributed to her. Her writings demonstrate a deep familiarity with theological texts and a sophisticated command of Latin.

A central theme in Gertrude's mystical experiences was her profound veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her writings, especially "The Herald of Divine Love," vividly recount visions related to Christ's heart. This devotion was rooted in the belief that Jesus' heart was a source of redemptive grace, flowing from the wound in his side. Gertrude described a particular vision where she rested her head near this wound and heard the beating of Christ's heart. This focus on the Sacred Heart became a significant element of the mystical spirituality practiced by the women at Helfta.

Following her death, Gertrude's works experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly in the 16th century and beyond. Her writings were translated and disseminated, influencing figures such as Teresa of Ávila and Francisco Ribera. She was considered an important spiritual guide, even seen as an antidote to Jansenism in 17th-century France. While never formally canonized by a solemn process, a liturgical office in her honor was approved in 1606, an act considered equivalent to canonization. Pope Benedict XIV later bestowed upon her the title "the Great" to distinguish her and acknowledge her spiritual depth. Her feast day is observed on November 16th in the Roman Rite, with variations in some national calendars.
