Sir George Trevelyan was a British statesman, author, and historian, known for his political career and writings on history and social reform.

Sir George Otto Trevelyan (1838-1928) was a prominent British figure who served as a statesman and author. His political career spanned nearly three decades, notably holding the position of Secretary for Scotland twice under Prime Ministers Gladstone and Rosebery. Initially breaking with Gladstone over the 1886 Irish Home Rule Bill, Trevelyan later rejoined the Liberal Party after modifications were made to the legislation. Beyond politics, he was a respected writer and historian. His literary output included works such as 'The Competition Wallah' and a biography of his uncle, Lord Macaulay, titled 'The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay'.

Educated at Harrow and Trinity College, Cambridge, where he was President of the Cambridge Union Society, Trevelyan also had a brief stint as a civil servant in India. His parliamentary career saw him represent constituencies like Tynemouth and North Shields, and later the Hawick Burghs. He held positions such as Civil Lord of the Admiralty and Parliamentary Secretary to the Admiralty. Trevelyan was a proponent of significant social and political reforms, including army reform, the extension of the county franchise, women's suffrage, and reform of the House of Lords. He was also a supporter of temperance legislation. He succeeded his father to the baronetcy in 1886 and was later elected to the American Philosophical Society and appointed a member of the Order of Merit.

Literary and Historical Contributions

George Trevelyan was a prolific author and historian, contributing significantly to the literary landscape of his time. His writing career began during his service in India, where he penned 'Letters of a Competition Wallah,' later republished in 1864. He also documented the Indian Rebellion of 1857 in 'Cawnpore' (1865). Trevelyan's historical works demonstrated a keen interest in British political history. He authored 'The Early History of Charles James Fox' (1880) and embarked on an extensive 'History of the American Revolution,' published in three volumes between 1905 and 1914. He also produced 'George III and Charles Fox,' appearing in two volumes in 1912 and 1914. A notable biographical work was 'The Life and Letters of Lord Macaulay' (1876), a detailed account of his maternal uncle, the esteemed historian.

Political and Social Advocacy

Throughout his extensive political career, George Trevelyan was a vocal advocate for a range of reforms. He served as Secretary for Scotland on two occasions and held other significant government posts. His commitment to social change was evident in his support for expanding voting rights, including the Household Franchise (Counties) Bill he introduced in 1874. Trevelyan championed women's suffrage, a thorough overhaul of London's local government, and significant reform, or even abolition, of the House of Lords. He also took a stance on temperance issues, favouring measures like the direct veto. His political journey involved shifts, such as his temporary departure from the Liberal Party over the Irish Home Rule issue before rejoining after legislative adjustments.
