George Miller Beard

George Miller Beard was an American physician and neurologist who significantly contributed to the understanding of nervous disorders in the late 19th century. He is best known for coining the term "neurasthenia," often translated as "American nervousness," which he described as a condition resulting from the stresses of modern industrial society. Beard's theories suggested that the rapid pace of technological advancement, increased communication, and economic competition were taxing the nervous systems of individuals, particularly in America.

His research involved extensive studies and travel, leading to his seminal work, "American Nervousness: Its Causes and Consequences." Beard’s perspective, while rooted in the medical understanding of his time, offered a framework for discussing the psychological and physiological impacts of societal changes. His work has been influential in the history of psychiatry and the study of psychosomatic illnesses, though the concept of neurasthenia has since been largely superseded by other diagnostic categories.
