Rumiko Takahashi, born October 10, 1957, is a celebrated Japanese manga artist whose career began in 1978 with "Urusei Yatsura." Her extensive body of work has achieved significant international success, with over 230 million copies in circulation worldwide, making her one of the best-selling authors globally. Takahashi has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Shogakukan Manga Award twice, the Seiun Award twice, the Grand Prix de la ville d'Angoulême in 2019, and the Japanese government's Medal with Purple Ribbon in 2020 for her artistic contributions.

Her artistic journey started during her university years, where she studied manga under Kazuo Koike and worked as an assistant to Kazuo Umezu. Takahashi's professional debut was the one-shot "Katte na Yatsura," followed by her first serialized work, the science fiction comedy "Urusei Yatsura." She went on to create other major series such as the romantic comedy "Maison Ikkoku," the martial arts series "Ranma ½" with a gender-bending premise, and the darker fantasy "Inuyasha," which became her longest-running series. Many of her works have been adapted into anime, OVAs, and films, further expanding their global reach.

Rumiko Takahashi's path to becoming a professional manga artist began during her university studies, where she attended Gekiga Sonjuku, a manga school led by Kazuo Koike. Under Koike's tutelage, she developed her early dōjinshi creations, such as "Bye-Bye Road" and "Star of Futile Dust." Koike's emphasis on crafting well-developed characters significantly shaped Takahashi's approach to storytelling throughout her career. She also gained practical experience by assisting horror manga artist Kazuo Umezu. While she initially showed little interest in manga as a child, doodling occasionally in school, her aspiration to become a professional comic author solidified over time, leading to her professional debut in 1978 with the one-shot "Katte na Yatsura."

Takahashi's professional career launched with "Katte na Yatsura" and quickly progressed to her first serialized work, the comedic science fiction series "Urusei Yatsura," in 1978. Despite initial challenges with deadlines, the series gained traction and was followed by other significant works. In 1980, she began "Maison Ikkoku," a romantic comedy aimed at an older audience, which explored themes relevant to apartment living. The 1980s also saw Takahashi become a prolific writer of short stories, many of which were adapted into original video animations (OVAs). Her notable longer series include "Mermaid Saga," which ran sporadically for a decade, and "One-Pound Gospel." Later major works include "Ranma ½," a martial arts series known for its gender-bending premise, and "Inuyasha," a darker fantasy series that became her longest-running manga to date.

Several of her major series, including "Urusei Yatsura," "Maison Ikkoku," "Ranma ½," "Inuyasha," and "RIN-NE," have been published in English by Viz Comics in the United States. Many of her creations have been adapted into animated forms, including TV series, OVAs, and films. "Urusei Yatsura" was the first to be animated in 1981, followed by "Maison Ikkoku," "Ranma ½," and "Inuyasha." The anime adaptations of "Ranma ½" and "Inuyasha" are recognized for their popularity in the United States. In 2008, a special exhibition titled "It's a Rumic World" celebrated her 30-year career milestone.
