Frederick Dodson

Betty Dodson, an American sex educator and artist, became a prominent figure in the pro-sex feminist movement. Initially trained as an artist, she exhibited erotic art in New York City before shifting her focus to sexual self-discovery following her divorce. Dodson developed and led "Bodysex" workshops starting in the 1970s, which guided women to explore their bodies and practice masturbation, often using vibrators, to achieve orgasm and foster self-love. Her "Betty Dodson Method" aimed to teach women how to experience simultaneous vaginal and clitoral stimulation, with a significant percentage of participants reporting success in achieving orgasm.

Dodson authored several books, including "Sex for One" and "Liberating Masturbation," which were translated into multiple languages and promoted her philosophy of sexual empowerment. She was critical of some feminist perspectives she viewed as anti-sexual or anti-male, aligning herself with fourth-wave feminism. Her work, which focused on encouraging women's sexual pleasure and self-discovery, gained support from younger generations of women seeking to overcome sexual shame and achieve greater satisfaction. Dodson passed away in 2020 at the age of 91.

Betty Dodson began her career path in New York City, pursuing training as an artist in the 1950s. She later exhibited her erotic art in the city, showcasing a visual exploration of sexuality. Her personal journey took a significant turn after her divorce in 1965, sparking a deep interest in "sexual self-discovery." This personal quest led her to hold her first solo exhibition of erotic art in 1968. Her experiences and insights into female sexuality were later compiled and shared through various publications, including a memoir and instructional series published in Ms. magazine and later released more broadly by Random House, which achieved international recognition through translation into numerous languages.

In the late 1960s, Dodson became a key figure in the sex-positive movement, developing "Bodysex" workshops that became highly influential from the 1970s onwards. These workshops were designed to help women connect with their bodies, understand their erogenous zones, overcome shame, enhance pleasure, and cultivate self-love. A central component of the workshops involved guided group exploration and masturbation, often utilizing a Hitachi Magic Wand vibrator. Dodson's "Betty Dodson Method" focused on teaching women simultaneous clitoral and vaginal stimulation to facilitate orgasm. She provided instruction and tools to thousands of women, with studies indicating a high success rate for previously anorgasmic women achieving orgasm through her techniques.

In her later years, Dodson continued to advocate for female sexual empowerment, publishing her memoir "Sex by Design" in 2010. She identified with fourth-wave feminism, a stance she felt was necessary to counter what she perceived as anti-sexual or restrictive attitudes within earlier waves of feminism. Dodson observed that her work resonated particularly with younger, successful women, including fourth-wave feminists, who were seeking to embrace pleasure and reject what they saw as the anti-pleasure stance of third-wave feminism. Her efforts to help women discover their sexual desires through masturbation and self-knowledge remained a core focus throughout her career.
