Emma Restall Orr

Born in 1965, Emma Restall Orr is a British writer recognized for her work in animism, philosophy, and poetry. Her career has significantly impacted the modern Druid movement. She was involved with the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids in the early 1990s and co-led the British Druid Order (BDO) from 1993 to 2002. Following her departure from the BDO, she established The Druid Network in 2003. Restall Orr also organized large Druid gatherings and founded the organization Honouring the Ancient Dead in 2004, serving as its Chair of Trustees. Her writings explore Druidic and pagan spirituality, ritual, and animism, with later works delving into themes of female nature, practical ethics, and a metaphysics of modern animism. Since 2012, she has focused on her project, Sun Rising Natural Burial Ground and Nature Reserve. Parts of a ritual she co-authored were featured in the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics.

In 2006, Emma Restall Orr expanded her focus to include environmental and ethical projects, co-founding Sun Rising Natural Burial Ground and Nature Reserve in South Warwickshire. This initiative combines ecological stewardship with a unique approach to end-of-life practices. Since 2012, she has largely withdrawn from public engagement in the Druid community to concentrate on this project. Her influence, however, has reached a global audience; parts of a ritual she co-authored with Philip Shallcrass in 1997 were recited during the closing ceremony of the 2012 Paralympics, broadcast to an estimated 750 million viewers. This event highlighted the broader cultural resonance of her work in ritual and spiritual expression.
