Dada Bhagwan, born Ambalal Patel, founded the Akram Vignan Movement, emphasizing self-realization and non-violence.

Dada Bhagwan, originally Ambalal Muljibhai Patel, was an Indian spiritual leader born in Gujarat in 1908. He worked as a contractor before experiencing what he described as self-realization in 1958. Following this event, he adopted the spiritual name Dada Bhagwan and dedicated himself to his spiritual pursuits, leaving his business to focus on his teachings. He established the Akram Vignan Movement, which gained followers in India and internationally. Key aspects of his teachings include the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and vegetarianism. Dada Bhagwan passed away in 1988, leaving behind a significant following and a movement that continued after his death.

The Akram Vignan Movement, as founded by Dada Bhagwan, offered a path to 'instant salvation' through spiritual grace, distinct from traditional step-by-step purification methods. His followers believe in achieving liberation by connecting with a 'knower' (Gnani). This syncretic approach, blending elements of Jain and Vaishnava traditions, is noted by observers. Dada Bhagwan's teaching method involved directly transferring spiritual knowledge, a process known as Gnanvidhi, which he began conducting publicly after initial reluctance. The movement saw significant expansion from the 1960s onwards, reaching Gujarati communities worldwide.

Spiritual Awakening and the Akram Vignan Movement

Ambalal Muljibhai Patel, later known as Dada Bhagwan, experienced a profound spiritual awakening in 1958, which he described as self-realization. This transformative event occurred at the Surat railway station and marked a turning point in his life. He subsequently dedicated himself to spiritual goals, leaving his successful contracting business. He established the Akram Vignan Movement, a spiritual path that offered followers a method for attaining immediate spiritual liberation. This approach differed from traditional religious practices by emphasizing direct spiritual transmission and the grace of a 'knower' (Gnani) rather than gradual purification.

Core Teachings and Practices

Central to Dada Bhagwan's teachings were the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and a strict lacto-vegetarian diet. He advocated for the protection of cows and discouraged the consumption of meat, eggs, and certain root vegetables like potatoes, onions, and garlic due to their perceived ability to incite anger and violence. His spiritual method, known as Gnanvidhi, involved a direct transfer of spiritual knowledge, enabling individuals to achieve self-realization. This practice, initially shared with close associates, was later offered publicly, leading to the movement's growth and expansion.

Movement's Growth and Legacy

The Akram Vignan Movement, initiated by Dada Bhagwan, expanded significantly from the 1960s and 1970s, spreading across western India and to Gujarati diaspora communities in East Africa, North America, and the UK. By 1983, his following was estimated to be around 50,000, and his funeral in 1988 was attended by approximately 60,000 followers. Following his passing, the movement divided into factions, but his teachings and the spiritual lineage continued through his successors, with organizations established to carry forward his spiritual work.
