Xu Xing, born in March 1956, is a multifaceted Chinese artist from Beijing, recognized as a writer, cultural scholar, independent documentary director, and modern ink painter. His literary career began with the 1985 novel "Variations Without a Theme," considered a pivotal work in transitioning Chinese literature from traditional to modern styles and a representative of "avant-garde novels." This genre significantly altered literary expression by breaking from traditional narrative functions.

Beyond his literary achievements, Xu Xing has explored filmmaking, directing documentaries that delve into personal and collective memory, particularly concerning the Chinese Cultural Revolution and the lives of ordinary people. His work has garnered international attention, leading to academic invitations and screenings at universities worldwide. He has also received numerous awards for both his writing and filmmaking, and his art has been exhibited internationally.

Xu Xing's literary journey commenced with his debut novel, "Variations Without a Theme," published in 1985. This work is widely acknowledged as a landmark in Chinese contemporary literature, signaling a shift from tradition to modernity. It became a touchstone for the "avant-garde novel" movement in China, which sought to redefine literary expression by moving beyond conventional narrative and descriptive techniques. Upon returning to China, he was recognized by France's "nouvel observateur" as one of the world's outstanding novelists. Since 2002, Xu Xing has dedicated himself to documentary filmmaking. His films, such as "A Chronicle of My Cultural Revolution" and "Crime Summary," explore personal experiences, collective memory, and the lives of ordinary individuals, often focusing on the Cultural Revolution era and its impact on rural communities. These documentaries have been screened and studied at numerous universities globally.

Xu Xing's artistic output extends to modern ink painting, with exhibitions, such as "Control & Flow" in Heidelberg in 2024, showcasing this facet of his creativity. His engagement with academia is extensive; he has served as a visiting professor at institutions like Boston University and Heidelberg University, teaching Chinese independent film production. Over two decades, he has been a frequent participant in academic visits, cultural studies, and film screenings at prestigious universities worldwide, including Harvard, Columbia, and Yale. His manuscripts from the 1980s are preserved and displayed at the University of Pittsburgh Library, alongside materials related to his films and art.
