Coloring Magic

Trung Le Nguyen, also known as Trungles, is a Vietnamese American cartoonist born in 1990. He immigrated to the United States as a child with his parents, who were Vietnamese boat people. Initially pursuing a career in arts administration after graduating from Hamline University, Nguyen ultimately shifted his focus to comics.

His artistic style is characterized by traditional inking and penciling, incorporating elements from Vietnamese culture, shōjo manga, and classic children's literature. Nguyen's work has received critical acclaim, with his debut graphic novel, "The Magic Fish" (2020), earning multiple awards. This book, inspired by his own experiences, tells the story of a young, gay Vietnamese immigrant who connects with his parents through shared fairy tales and language learning.

Nguyen's journey into comics began in middle school, though he initially viewed it as a casual pastime. After earning a degree in studio art, he considered arts administration before deciding to pursue a career in cartooning. His professional involvement in the comics industry includes serving as a jurist for the Ignatz Awards in 2017. In the same year, he published the coloring book "Fauns & Fairies" through Oni Press's Limerence Press imprint. He also contributed as an artist to the "Twisted Romance" anthology in 2018. His breakthrough came in 2020 with the publication of his graphic novel "The Magic Fish" by Random House Graphic, which garnered significant recognition. A second graphic novel, "Angelica And The Bear Prince," is slated for publication in 2025.
