Colin Edward Thompson was born in London in 1942. He experienced a change in surname during his childhood due to his mother's remarriage. Thompson's early education included boarding school and grammar school, followed by art studies in Ealing and Hammersmith. His initial professional life involved work as a silk-screen printer and graphic designer. He furthered his creative training at the London Film School, contributing to documentaries for the BBC. Following personal changes, including two marriages and the birth of his daughter, Thompson pursued a career in ceramics with his second wife, living in various locations in the UK before relocating to Australia in 1995, where he later obtained citizenship.
Writing and Illustration Career
Thompson's career as a published author and illustrator commenced in the early 1990s. Initially, he presented black-and-white illustrations to a publisher, expecting someone else to provide the text. However, he was encouraged to write the stories himself and revise his artwork in color. His debut picture book, 'Ethel the Chicken,' was released in 1991. To date, he has authored and illustrated more than 70 books, primarily for children. Beyond picture books, he has also authored series of novels aimed at pre-teens and young adults. His characteristic illustrations, noted for their intricate detail, imaginative quality, and vibrant colors, are also utilized in popular jigsaw puzzles and cross-stitch designs.

Colin Thompson's work has garnered significant recognition. His 1995 book, 'Ruby,' received the English 4–11 Picture Book Award. The Children's Book Council of Australia shortlisted 'Staircase Cat' in 1999 and Thompson's titles have been finalists in subsequent years, with 'The Short and Incredibly Happy Life of Riley' winning best picture book in 2006. Other finalist works include 'The Violin Man,' 'Dust,' and 'The Big Little Book of Happy Sadness.'
