Kevin Avery is a writer and editor known for his biographical works on Paul Nelson and interviews with Clint Eastwood.

Kevin Avery, born in Salt Lake City, Utah, is an American author, biographer, and editor whose career began after a period as a vice-president in the transportation industry. He transitioned to writing, initially publishing short fiction in various periodicals before moving into nonfiction, focusing on rock and roll criticism.

Avery's work is notably connected to the critic Paul Nelson. He authored "Everything Is an Afterthought: The Life and Writings of Paul Nelson," a biographical anthology that also documented Nelson's life. This project involved extensive research and interviews with Nelson's associates and artists Nelson had written about. He also edited "Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson's Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979–1983," compiling interviews Nelson conducted with Clint Eastwood. More recently, he edited "It's All One Case: The Illustrated Ross Macdonald Archives," based on Nelson's interviews with the detective writer. Avery also founded a public relations firm, Mere Words Media Relations. He relocated to New York City in 2005 to further his writing career and resides there with his wife.

Literary Career and Influences

Kevin Avery's literary path led him to authoring biographies and editing collections, with a significant focus on the life and work of music critic Paul Nelson. His early writing career included publishing short stories and then nonfiction, primarily rock and roll criticism, for various magazines. Avery's engagement with Paul Nelson's work began in his teenage years, and this influence culminated in his first book, "Everything Is an Afterthought: The Life and Writings of Paul Nelson." This anthology-biography not only presented Nelson's writings but also explored his life story. Avery's research for this project involved speaking with Nelson's friends, family, and fellow critics, as well as musicians and artists who were subjects of Nelson's work, such as Bruce Springsteen and Tori Amos. This deep dive into Nelson's legacy also extended to editing Nelson's posthumously discovered interviews with Clint Eastwood, published as "Conversations with Clint."

Editorial Work and Further Projects

Beyond his biographical work on Paul Nelson, Kevin Avery has undertaken other significant editorial projects. He compiled and edited "Conversations with Clint: Paul Nelson's Lost Interviews with Clint Eastwood, 1979–1983," a project that brought to light Nelson's extensive interviews with the filmmaker. This book was published shortly before his biography of Nelson. Avery's editorial contributions also include "It's All One Case: The Illustrated Ross Macdonald Archives," which involved organizing and editing Paul Nelson's extensive interviews with the renowned detective novelist Ross Macdonald. In addition to his writing and editing endeavors, Avery established Mere Words Media Relations, a boutique public relations firm. His personal life saw him move to New York City in 2005 to pursue his writing career, where he married and currently resides.
