Christine Chaundler was a prolific English author of children's books, also writing as Peter Martin, whose work was recognized and broadcast.

Christine Chaundler, born in 1887 and passing in 1972, was a prolific English writer primarily known for her extensive contributions to children's literature. She penned hundreds of short stories and numerous books, often for girls under her own name and for boys using the pseudonym Peter Martin. Her career began in earnest after World War I, where she briefly served in the Land Army. She held editorial positions for juvenile books and reviewed children's literature for publications like The Quiver.

Chaundler's work gained significant traction, with her stories being broadcast by the BBC on Children's Hour. In 1927, a census of popular authors for young girls ranked her sixth, placing her above celebrated writers like Louisa May Alcott and Robert Louis Stevenson. By the 1930s, she had established a substantial income from her writing. As the market for traditional children's books shifted in the late 1940s, Chaundler adapted by focusing on reviewing, editorial reading for publishers, and submitting stories to the BBC. She lived independently in a house she built on the Sussex Downs from 1920 until her death, never having married.

Early Life and Education

Christine Chaundler entered the world on September 5, 1887, in Biggleswade, Bedfordshire. Her father, Henry Chaundler, was a solicitor, and her mother's name was Constance Julia (née Thompson). Chaundler received her education at Queen Anne's School in Caversham, concluding her studies there at sixteen. She then continued her education at St Winifred's School in Llanfairfechan. Her formative years were marked by a traditional upbringing, preparing her for a life that would eventually be dedicated to writing.

Writing Career and Pseudonym

Chaundler's writing career officially began in 1912 when she earned her first payment of 10s 6d for a prize poem published in Girls' Realm. From that point, she developed a consistent income through writing stories for both girls and boys. She notably used the pseudonym Peter Martin for her stories aimed at boys. Her early professional experience included editorial roles, such as sub-editor for Little Folks from 1914 to 1917, and later editing juvenile books for James Nisbet and Company until 1922. During the 1930s, she also contributed as a children's book reviewer for The Quiver. Her prolific output included hundreds of short stories published in magazines and annuals, many of which achieved broadcast on the BBC's Children's Hour.

Literary Recognition and Later Years

Chaundler achieved notable recognition within the literary world. A 1927 census by the Western Mail identified her as the sixth most popular author among young girls, surpassing figures like Louisa May Alcott and Robert Louis Stevenson, though she ranked below literary giants such as Dickens, Shakespeare, and Kipling. By 1920, her success allowed her to purchase and build a home on the Sussex Downs, where she resided until her passing in 1972. Despite her prolific career, she never married. As the landscape for children's books evolved around the late 1940s, Chaundler shifted her focus towards book reviewing, evaluating manuscripts for publishers, and continuing to supply short stories to the BBC.
