Charles Hammond Gibson Jr. was a Boston author and banker known for his poetry, travel writings, and preservation of his family home.

Charles Hammond Gibson Jr. (1874–1954) hailed from a prominent Boston family and pursued literary and architectural studies, though he did not graduate.

His career included a stint as secretary to Viscount Northcliffe, assisting with a polar expedition. Gibson was a published poet and author, with works ranging from sonnets to a travel novel. He was also involved in the Boston literary scene, serving as chairman of the Boston Authors Club. Beyond his writing, Gibson was an investment banker and was recognized for his elaborate rose gardens. He also held a position as Boston's parks commissioner, during which he designed a notable public structure.

Gibson's most enduring legacy is the preservation of his family's mansion, the Gibson House, which he ensured was maintained as a historical record of the Victorian era. The house opened to the public after his death. He also recorded himself reading his poetry for Harvard University's Woodberry Poetry Room.

Literary Pursuits and Early Life

Born in 1874 into a wealthy Boston family, Charles Hammond Gibson Jr. received a private education, attending St. Paul's School and studying architecture at MIT, though he did not complete his degree. Following his studies, he traveled to Europe, where he served as secretary to Alfred Harmsworth, 1st Viscount Northcliffe, aiding in the preparation of the Jackson–Harmsworth Polar Exposition. His literary career began with poetry, publishing his first sonnet in 1894. He later privately printed collections of his poems, including "The Spirit of Love and Other Poems" (1906) and "The Wounded Eros, Sonnets" (1908). He also authored a novel, "Two Gentlemen in Touraine" (1899), published under the pseudonym Richard Sudbury, which blended romance with a chronicle of French landmarks, and an illustrated travelogue, "Among French Country Inns."

Public Life and Legacy

Gibson was an active figure in Boston society. He was a charter member and chairman of the Boston Authors Club, participating in its founding meeting. In the early 1900s, he also worked as an investment banker. He was known for his passion for horticulture, particularly his rose gardens at the family's summer estate in Nahant, Massachusetts. His civic involvement included a term as Boston's parks commissioner, a role in which he designed a structure for Boston Common. In his later years, Gibson was involved in preserving his family's history, establishing the Gibson House Museum to maintain his ancestral mansion as a preserved example of Victorian life. He also contributed to academic archives by recording himself reading his poetry for Harvard University.
