Catherine Shainberg

Jane Lahr, born September 2, 1943, is an American author, editor, and literary agent. Daughter of actor Bert Lahr and sister to critic John Lahr, she pursued art studies in London before entering the publishing world.

Her career began at Harry N. Abrams, Inc., where she innovated in Special Sales and led advertising, publicity, and promotion. She later co-founded Stewart, Tabori & Chang, playing a key role in the packaging and marketing of "Grandmother Remembers" and co-editing "Love: a Celebration in Art & Literature." Lahr has packaged several books and edited "The Celtic Quest." Her 2007 book, "Searching for Mary Magdalene: A Journey in Art & Literature," received an Independent Publisher Book Award. She also co-edited "Speaking from the Heart: Ethics, Reincarnation & What it Means to Be Human." Lahr is a partner in the book packaging and agenting firm Lahr & Partners, LLC.

She has been married twice and has a daughter, Maya Gottfried, who is also a writer. Lahr serves on the Board of Directors for The School of Images, founded by Dr. Catherine Shainberg, and the Abby Whiteside Foundation.

Jane Lahr established a significant career in the publishing industry, beginning with her tenure at Harry N. Abrams, Inc. There, she was a pioneer in the Special Sales department and advanced to become Director of Advertising, Publicity, and Promotion. Her entrepreneurial spirit led her to co-found Stewart, Tabori & Chang (STC), a firm where she was instrumental in the creative packaging and marketing strategies for titles such as "Grandmother Remembers." She also co-edited "Love: a Celebration in Art & Literature" with Lena Tabori, a work that has remained in publication for over two decades. Lahr's expertise extends to packaging other books, including "Jean Howard’s Hollywood" and "Only the Best."

Beyond her work in packaging and editing, Jane Lahr has authored and contributed to several notable books. She edited "The Celtic Quest," which was selected by both the Book of the Month Club and the Literary Guild. Her own book, "Searching for Mary Magdalene: A Journey in Art & Literature," published in 2007, garnered a Silver Independent Publisher Book Award in the religion category. In the same year, she co-edited "Speaking from the Heart: Ethics, Reincarnation & What it Means to Be Human" alongside Joan Grant. Lahr continues her involvement in the literary world as a partner in the book packaging and agenting company, Lahr & Partners, LLC.

Jane Lahr's engagement extends beyond her professional work. She is currently a member of the Board of Directors for The School of Images, an institution established in 1982 by Dr. Catherine Shainberg in New York City. Additionally, she serves on the Board of the Abby Whiteside Foundation. In her personal life, Lahr was previously married to theater critic and author Martin Gottfried and is now married to Sherman E. Crites. She is the mother of Maya Gottfried, who is a writer.
