Cassandra Peterson, born September 17, 1951, is an American actress best known for creating and portraying the character Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Peterson developed the Elvira persona, a sexy goth/vampire horror hostess, in part from a "Valley girl" character she created while a member of the Los Angeles improvisational troupe The Groundlings. Her career began with early roles in Las Vegas and Italy, including a part in Federico Fellini's "Roma." She later worked as a showgirl and model before finding fame on Los Angeles television station KHJ-TV hosting "Elvira's Movie Macabre," a B-movie presentation.

The immense popularity of "Elvira's Movie Macabre" led to feature films, including "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark" (1988) and "Elvira's Haunted Hills" (2001), both starring Peterson. The show itself has seen revivals and new iterations over the years, including "13 Nights of Elvira" on Hulu and a 40th-anniversary special on Shudder. Beyond her signature role, Peterson has made numerous cameo appearances and guest spots in films, television, and wrestling events. Her distinctive persona has also spawned a wide array of merchandise, solidifying Elvira's status as a pop culture icon.

Born Cassandra Gay Peterson on September 17, 1951, in Manhattan, Kansas, her early life was marked by a significant childhood burn injury that required extensive skin grafts. Relocating to Colorado Springs, her family was involved in the costume business. Peterson has spoken of a childhood fascination with horror-themed toys and recalls watching "House on Haunted Hill" as her first horror film. Her youth included work as a go-go dancer and a drag queen dancer in local establishments. Early comedic influences cited by Peterson include Phyllis Diller, Totie Fields, and Anne Meara. Her interest in performance also led her to a brief stint as a showgirl in Las Vegas after being noticed during a trip there in her teenage years.

Peterson's journey to superstardom began with her involvement in the Los Angeles improvisational troupe, The Groundlings, where she developed a "Valley girl" character that would form the basis of Elvira. In 1981, KHJ-TV offered her the opportunity to host a revived horror show. After producers rejected her initial concept for Elvira's look, Peterson, with her friend Robert Redding, crafted the now-iconic sexy goth/vampire aesthetic, drawing inspiration from Kabuki makeup and 1960s hairstyles. Despite a legal challenge from Maila Nurmi (Vampira) over alleged similarities, Peterson prevailed, and the Elvira character quickly gained traction due to her distinctive low-cut black gown, cleavage-focused humor, and satirical, "Valley girl"-esque commentary. This persona resonated with audiences, blending camp, sex appeal, and self-mockery.

The success of "Elvira's Movie Macabre" propelled Peterson and her character into a significant cultural phenomenon. The Elvira persona became a lucrative brand, extending beyond television to encompass a vast range of merchandise, including costumes, comic books, action figures, and more throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Peterson hosted Halloween specials on MTV and provided commentary for events like WrestleMania 2. The character's popularity culminated in the 1988 film "Elvira: Mistress of the Dark," co-written by Peterson. She later co-wrote and co-produced the 2001 film "Elvira's Haunted Hills." Throughout her career, Peterson has continued to revive the Elvira character in various television series and specials, most recently in a 2021 anniversary special. She has also explored developing an animated Elvira project and a sequel to her 1988 film.
