Caroline Sinavaiana-Gabbard, born in American Samoa in 1946, was a distinguished academic, writer, and poet. She achieved a significant milestone as the first Samoan individual to attain the rank of full professor in the United States. Her academic journey included studies at Sonoma State University, the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Hawai'i, where she completed her PhD with a dissertation on traditional Samoan comic theater, viewed through a holographic lens.

She dedicated her career to teaching creative writing at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, serving on the English faculty from 1997 until her retirement in 2016. Her poetic contributions were recognized with the publication of "Alchemies of Distance" in 2002. In 2020, she was acknowledged for her influence by being named on USA Today's list of prominent women from U.S. territories. After retiring, she relocated to Samoa. Sadly, she was murdered on May 26, 2024, at the age of 78, in Vaivase-uta, Samoa. A playwright was subsequently charged with her killing. She was also known as the sister of politician Mike Gabbard and aunt to Tulsi Gabbard.

Her life concluded tragically on May 26, 2024, when she was murdered at the GaluMoana Theater in Vaivase-uta, Samoa, at the age of 78. The circumstances of her death led to charges against playwright Sia Figiel. She was also part of a notable American political family, being the sister of Mike Gabbard and paternal aunt to Tulsi Gabbard.
