Caroline Spurgeon was a pioneering English literary critic and professor, recognized for her scholarship on Chaucer and Shakespeare.

Caroline Frances Eleanor Spurgeon was an English literary critic born in India in 1869. She achieved significant recognition in academia, becoming the Hildred Carlisle Professor of English at the University of London in 1913 and heading the English Department at Bedford College. Notably, she was the first woman to hold a professorial chair at the University of London and one of the first in Britain. Spurgeon was instrumental in advancing English studies, advocating for women's access to academic degrees and opportunities. She co-founded the International Federation of University Women with Virginia Gildersleeve. Spurgeon was a distinguished scholar, with her doctoral work focusing on Chaucerian criticism and her most famous publication, "Shakespeare's Imagery and What it Tells Us," offering an innovative analysis of Shakespeare's use of poetic images. She spent her later years in Tucson, Arizona, where she died in 1942. Her remains were later moved to be buried with her companion, Lilian Mary Clapham.

Academic Career and Advocacy

Educated at Cheltenham Ladies' College, Dresden, King's College London, and University College London, Caroline Spurgeon emerged as a leading figure in English literary studies. She became the first female university professor in London and the second in England, specifically recognized as the first female professor of English Literature. Her academic career began with lectureships in English Literature in London from 1900, leading to her appointment at Bedford College in 1901. In 1913, she secured the newly established chair for English literature. Spurgeon was a staunch advocate for women in academia, actively campaigning for their eligibility to receive academic degrees and for increased opportunities for foreign women in British universities. Her own professorial appointment represented a significant milestone for women's higher education.

Scholarship on Chaucer and Shakespeare

Spurgeon made substantial contributions to the study of medieval and Renaissance literature. Her doctoral dissertation, completed in Paris in 1911, examined Chaucerian criticism. This work was later expanded and published in English in 1929 as "Five Hundred Years of Chaucer Criticism and Allusion, 1357–1900," solidifying her reputation in the field of Chaucerian scholarship. Her most influential work, "Shakespeare's Imagery and What it Tells Us" (1935), introduced a novel methodological approach to analyzing Shakespeare's poetic imagery. The book explored various categories of images used by Shakespeare and demonstrated how clusters of specific images within plays could offer insights into their meaning, the poet's mind, his background, and even help authenticate authorship by distinguishing his stylistic patterns from those of other writers.

Key Ideas

  • Analysis of Shakespeare's imagery as a tool for understanding plays and the poet's mind.
  • Using statistical comparison of imagery to aid in Shakespearean authorship attribution.
  • Advocacy for women's academic rights and opportunities in higher education.
