C. L. Brightwell was an English author and etcher known for biographical works for young people.

Cecilia Lucy Brightwell, also known as Lucy Brightwell, was an English artist and writer who lived from 1811 to 1875. She was particularly recognized for creating short biographical volumes aimed at younger readers. Brightwell was also a skilled etcher, producing numerous original works and reproductions of Old Masters. Her father was a solicitor with scientific interests, and she assisted him in his natural history publications, drawing and lithographing figures for his work on microscopic life. Brightwell was also a good Italian scholar and independent in her artistic methods. She contributed financially to a lifeboat on the Norfolk coast. Many of her writings were published by the Religious Tract Society, focusing on the lives of notable individuals, including her first major work, the Life of Amelia Opie, whose father was a friend and executor of the subject. Brightwell suffered from cataracts in her later years, a condition her father also experienced.

Early Life and Artistic Development

Born in 1811 near Norwich, Cecilia Lucy Brightwell was the eldest child of Thomas Brightwell, a solicitor and amateur scientist, and Mary Snell. Her father, a man of scientific curiosity, was known for his work with microscopes and discovered a species of rotifer. He also published on natural history, and Lucy assisted him significantly in preparing his "Sketch of a Fauna Infusoria for East Norfolk" by drawing and lithographing the illustrations. Brightwell was also a proficient Italian scholar. She developed her skills as an etcher independently, without extensive formal training, and was noted for her ability in this medium. Despite her artistic talents, she was not highly social, preferring a more private life. She also demonstrated a philanthropic spirit through her substantial contribution to a lifeboat stationed on the Norfolk coast.

Literary Contributions

Brightwell's literary output primarily consisted of biographical works intended for a young audience, many of which were published by the Religious Tract Society. Her most significant early publication was "Life of Amelia Opie" in 1854, a biography of the writer whose father had been a friend and executor of Opie. Her other writings explored the lives of various historical figures, including scientists, naturalists, reformers, and Christian gentlewomen. Titles such as "Palissy the Huguenot Potter," "Life of Linnaeus," "Heroes of the Laboratory and Workshop," and "Romance of Incidents in the Lives of Naturalists" reflect her interest in notable individuals and their achievements. Her later works included "Annals of Industry and Genius" and "So Great Love: Sketches of Missionary Life and Labour," which was her final publication.

Etching and Artistic Legacy

Beyond her writing, C. L. Brightwell was an accomplished etcher. Her published etchings include views of historical sites and natural landscapes, such as scenes from Ranworth Decoy and Bromeholme Priory. She also created reproductions of works by Old Masters, including pieces after Rembrandt, Dürer, Raphael, and Annibale Caracci. Her reproduction of Rembrandt's "Long Landscape" was so skillfully executed that an impression placed alongside the original in the British Museum reportedly deceived expert judges. Her unpublished etchings also covered a range of subjects, from biblical scenes and mythological figures to landscapes and genre subjects, demonstrating a broad artistic scope and technical proficiency.
