Brian McConnell

Daniel McConnell is an accomplished Irish journalist who currently serves as the editor of the Business Post, a position he assumed in April 2023. His extensive career in journalism includes significant tenures at prominent Irish newspapers such as the Irish Times, Irish Independent, Sunday Independent, Irish Examiner, and the Irish edition of the Sunday Times. McConnell has also been a frequent commentator on Irish television and radio, even filling in as a presenter for The Last Word With Matt Cooper on Today FM.

His journalistic achievements have been widely recognized. In November 2022, he was honored as Ireland's national journalist of the year and political journalist of the year, also securing the "scoop of the year" award. Earlier, in 2017, he received the News Analyst of the Year award. McConnell's academic background includes a Masters in Journalism from Dublin City University, and he began his career after involvement in student media at University College Dublin, where he was recognized for his work with the University Observer.

Born in Dublin, Daniel McConnell received his education at St Benildus College before attending University College Dublin. During his time at university, he became actively involved in student politics and contributed to student publications, including the University Observer and the College Tribune. As editor of the University Observer, alongside Enda Curran, he was recognized as national student editor of the year, and their newspaper won best newspaper of the year at the 2002 Student Media Awards. He further honed his skills by completing a Masters in Journalism at Dublin City University.

McConnell's professional career has seen him work across a variety of leading Irish media outlets. He began his work with the Sunday Times, co-authoring a guide to secondary schools. He then moved to the Irish Times in 2004, following in the journalistic footsteps of his father, John McConnell. His career progressed through various roles at Independent News and Media (INM) titles, including reporting on the post-2008 Irish banking crisis. He served as political editor for the Irish Examiner from 2015 and, in 2016, received a Justice Media Award for his reporting on the 'Grace' abuse story. His extensive experience and contributions have led to numerous accolades, including being named Ireland's national journalist of the year and political journalist of the year in 2022.

In January 2023, Daniel McConnell was appointed editor of the Business Post, officially taking up the role in April of the same year. His editorship commenced during a period of significant organizational change, with a focus on leading a "major digital transformation" and a strategic restructuring. This period also saw external investment, with the Swedish media company Bonnier News acquiring a minority stake in the Business Post in July 2023. McConnell's leadership at the Business Post continues his long-standing career in Irish journalism, building on his experience at other major national publications.
