William Bowen was an American attorney and author of children's fantasy books in the 1920s.

William Alvin Bowen, born in 1877, was an American lawyer who also penned several children's books during the 1920s. After completing his law degree from the University of Maryland in 1898, he initially practiced law with his father. In 1904, Bowen relocated to Los Angeles, where his career took a different turn. He served as an attorney for the Olympic Committee during the 1932 Summer Olympics and was also an active member of historical societies in California. Bowen passed away in 1937.

His literary contributions primarily focused on children's fantasy literature. His first book, "The Enchanted Forest," was published in late 1920, followed by "The Old Tobacco Shop" a year later. The latter achieved notable recognition, being named a runner-up for the prestigious Newbery Medal in its inaugural year, 1922. Bowen continued to write, with other works like "Solario the Tailor" and "Merrimeg" appearing in the early to mid-1920s.

William Alvin Bowen's professional life was primarily rooted in the legal field. He earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Maryland in 1898. Initially, he joined his father's law office, gaining practical experience in the legal profession. In 1904, Bowen made a significant move to Los Angeles. His civic engagement in his new city included a role as an attorney for the organizing committee of the 1932 Summer Olympics. He also dedicated time to historical preservation, holding memberships in both the California Historical Society and the Southern California Historical Society.

Bowen gained recognition for his contributions to children's literature, particularly within the fantasy genre, during the 1920s. His debut children's book, "The Enchanted Forest," was released by Macmillan in 1920. He followed this with "The Old Tobacco Shop" in 1921, which became his most celebrated work. This fantasy novel was acknowledged as a runner-up for the very first Newbery Medal awarded in 1922, highlighting its critical reception among contemporary children's literature.
