Designed by the 17th-century medal maker Claude Warin, the original medal features a profile of Thomas Bodley on one side, inscribed in Latin, and a symbolic depiction of the "Eternity of the Republic of Letters" on the reverse. After a long period of dormancy, the Bodley Medal was revived in 2002, coinciding with the library's 400th anniversary. A set of replicas was created using reclaimed copper from the library's original roof. The award is now presented annually as part of the Oxford Literary Festival, recognizing contemporary figures for their impact on literature and communication.

The Bodley Medal is distinguished by its design, which reflects its historical and philosophical underpinnings. The obverse side features a right-profile portrait of Sir Thomas Bodley, accompanied by the Latin inscription "TH BODLY EQ AVR PVBL BIBLIOTH OXON FVNDATOR." This translates to "Sir Thomas Bodley, Founder of the Public Library at Oxford," directly referencing his pivotal role in establishing the institution. The reverse of the medal bears the inscription "R P LITERARIAE AETERNITAS," meaning "The Eternity of the Republic of Letters." This symbolic representation, featuring a female figure holding a head in each hand, likely signifies the enduring and universal nature of knowledge and intellectual discourse across time and cultures. The medal is further identified by the signature "Warin" on the obverse, indicating its creator.

The origins of the Bodley Medal trace back to 1646, when an original medal was commissioned to commemorate Sir Thomas Bodley, who re-established Oxford's first public library in 1602, now known as the Bodleian Library. The creation of this original medal was overseen by Claude Warin, a prominent medalist of the 17th century. Records from 1646 indicate payments made to an artist for a portrait of Bodley and to "Mr. Warren" for crafting the medal, which was likely gilded bronze. Following a hiatus of almost four centuries, the Bodley Medal was re-introduced in 2002, marking the 400th anniversary of the Bodleian Library. To celebrate this occasion, one hundred replicas were produced by the Royal Mint from copper salvaged during renovations of the library's original roof. The modern iteration of the award is presented annually during the Oxford Literary Festival.
