After earning degrees from the University of Georgia, he taught English before dedicating himself to writing full-time in 1974.

Bishop's work was widely translated and appeared in numerous prestigious literary and genre publications. He also published poetry and nonfiction. Michael Bishop's professional writing career began in 1970 with the sale of his short story "Piñon Fall." His significant works include the Urban Nucleus (UrNu) cycle and the Glaktik Komm series. His stories appeared in prominent magazines such as Galaxy Science Fiction, If, and The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, which became a primary venue for his fantasy and horror pieces. Bishop's early novellas, like "Death and Designation Among the Asadi," received award nominations. He authored fifteen solo novels, three collaborative novels, and over 150 short stories, many compiled into eleven collections. His work has been translated into numerous languages. Critics noted his early novels' intellectual complexity and anthropological focus on aliens and alienating environments, with some observing a blend of exotic settings and moral exploration.

His personal life included two grandchildren through his daughter Stephanie. A profound tragedy struck the family in 2007 when his son, Jamie, was a victim of the Virginia Tech shooting. Following this event, Bishop and his wife became advocates for stricter gun laws. Michael Bishop died of cancer on November 13, 2023, in LaGrange, Georgia, just after his 78th birthday.
