Bill Scott

Bill Scott, born William Neville Scott, was an Australian author, folklorist, poet, and songwriter known for his extensive work collecting and preserving Australian bush ballads and folk history. He served in the Royal Australian Navy during World War II, during which he began writing poetry, with his first poem appearing in The Bulletin in 1944. Born in Bundaberg, Queensland, Bill Scott spent his formative years in Caboolture and Brisbane. His literary journey began during his service in the Royal Australian Navy in World War II, where he started writing poetry. After his naval service, Scott experienced a diverse range of occupations across Queensland, including work as a sugar cane cutter, umbrella maker, steam-engine driver, gold prospector, and in the smelters of Mount Isa. He also worked as a seaman on a lighthouse tender in the 1950s before joining a publishing house. In 1974, Scott transitioned to full-time writing, a career that would see him produce a significant body of work.

Scott is widely celebrated for his extensive collection and documentation of Australian folklore, bush songs, and folk history. His anthology, "The Complete Book of Australian Folklore," published in 1976, achieved considerable success and has maintained continuous publication. He also compiled "The Second Penguin Australian Songbook." Throughout his career, Scott completed 51 books, including novels, short stories, verse, biographies, and magazine articles. His work often focused on Australian folk traditions, making him a renowned collector and writer in this field. Many of his poems are well-known and recited by children, and he was a founding member of the Queensland Folk Federation, which now organizes the Woodford Folk Festival. His dedication to preserving Australian folk culture earned him the Order of Australia in 1992 and the recognition of being a "living treasure."
