Charlotte Joko Beck was an American Zen teacher who integrated Zen practice with modern psychology.

Charlotte Joko Beck, born in 1917, was an American Zen teacher and author known for her unique approach to Zen practice. Initially trained as a musician, she began her Zen studies in her 40s with prominent teachers like Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi. After receiving Dharma transmission, she established Zen Center San Diego in 1983, developing innovative teaching methods that resonated with students interested in the intersection of Zen and psychology.

Beck's teaching style emphasized working with psychological states, attracting many students who were psychologists or psychiatrists. She co-founded the Ordinary Mind Zen School in 1995. Later in her career, she had a falling out with some senior students, revoking Dharma transmission from Ezra Bayda and Elizabeth Hamilton and stating that Zen Center San Diego should not represent her teachings. She continued teaching until her retirement in 2010 and passed away in 2011 at the age of 94.

Zen Teaching and Psychological Integration

Charlotte Joko Beck made significant contributions to Zen pedagogy by skillfully guiding students to engage with their inner psychological landscapes. This focus attracted individuals seeking to understand the connections between Zen principles and contemporary psychological thought. A notable outcome of this approach was that several of her designated Dharma heirs went on to become practicing psychologists and psychiatrists, reflecting the deep integration of these fields within her lineage. In 1995, Joko Beck, alongside three of her Dharma heirs, established the Ordinary Mind Zen School, formalizing this distinctive path within Zen Buddhism.

Later Years and Dharma Succession

In her later years, Charlotte Joko Beck's relationship with some of her senior students became strained. In 2006, she rescinded Dharma transmission from Ezra Bayda and Elizabeth Hamilton, also indicating that Zen Center San Diego should no longer be associated with her or her teachings. She relocated to Prescott, Arizona, where she continued to offer instruction until her retirement in late 2010. The final Dharma successor she appointed was Gary Nafstad in the spring of 2010. Beck passed away in June 2011 at the age of 94.
