Bailey, Alice A.

Alice Ann Bailey, born in England in 1880, was a prolific writer who authored approximately 25 books on Theosophy and esoteric subjects. She moved to the United States in 1907 and became a significant figure in the early New Age movement. Bailey's extensive writings, produced between 1919 and 1949, outline a complex spiritual system that explores the relationship between humanity, the Solar System, and divine purpose.

Bailey claimed that the majority of her works were telepathically received from a spiritual entity identified as "the Tibetan" or "D.K.", later revealed as Djwal Khul. Her teachings, often referred to as "Ageless Wisdom," share common ground with Helena Blavatsky's Theosophy but also present distinct perspectives, particularly on religious themes and societal evolution. She co-founded the Lucis Trust in 1922, an organization that continues to disseminate her teachings through various initiatives, including the Arcane School.

Alice Bailey's literary output between 1919 and 1949 established a comprehensive neo-theosophical framework. Her works delve into intricate spiritual concepts, including the connection between human existence and the wider cosmos, the practice of meditation, principles of spiritual healing, the psychology of spiritual development, and visions for societal transformation. A central element of her system is the concept of the "seven rays," described as fundamental universal energies influencing psychology, national destinies, and cosmic forces. Bailey also presented an esoteric astrology focused on the evolution of consciousness and detailed teachings on esoteric healing, viewing physical ailments as rooted in imbalances between the soul and its material expression.

Bailey stated that her extensive body of work was dictated to her through telepathic communication by a spiritual guide she called "the Tibetan," later identified as Djwal Khul. These teachings are often categorized under the umbrella term "Ageless Wisdom," indicating a lineage of ancient spiritual knowledge. While her writings bear resemblances to those of Helena Blavatsky, founder of the Theosophical Society, Bailey's system introduced unique interpretations and expansions. She proposed a vision for a unified global society, emphasizing a "spirit of religion" that transcended orthodox forms and incorporating concepts like the Age of Aquarius.

In 1937, Bailey introduced "The Great Invocation," a mantra intended to facilitate the flow of light and love into humanity's consciousness, aligning with a divine plan and the anticipated return of the Christ. This invocation has become a significant practice within some New Age communities. Alongside her husband Foster Bailey, Alice Bailey established the Lucis Trust in 1922, initially named Lucifer Publishing Company. This organization encompasses the Arcane School, which offers correspondence courses in meditation based on her teachings, and World Goodwill, dedicated to promoting compassionate global relations. The "Triangles" initiative, another facet of Lucis Trust, encourages groups to meditate on right human relations.
