Austin Osman Spare

Austin Osman Spare (1886–1956) was an English artist and occultist whose work spanned drawing, writing, and painting. His artistic style, influenced by symbolism and Art Nouveau, was characterized by its clear lines and often depicted monstrous and sexual themes. In his occult pursuits, Spare developed distinct magical practices, including automatic writing, automatic drawing, and sigilization, all rooted in his theories about the interplay between the conscious and unconscious mind. Born into a working-class London family, Spare showed early artistic talent, eventually studying at the Royal College of Art. He became involved with Western esotericism and briefly with Aleister Crowley's A∴A∴, though he diverged from Crowley's hierarchical approach. Spare authored several occult books such as 'Earth Inferno' and 'The Book of Pleasure'. Despite periods of poverty and relative obscurity, his work gained renewed attention, particularly with the rise of Surrealism, which recognized his art as a precursor. Born in London in 1886, Austin Osman Spare displayed an early aptitude for drawing, attending evening art classes and later gaining a scholarship to the Royal College of Art. His artistic training, while formal, was supplemented by his personal exploration of theosophy and Western esotericism. Spare's early art, noted for its precise linework, often incorporated symbolic and sometimes unsettling imagery, drawing comparisons to artists like Aubrey Beardsley. He gained public attention as a young exhibitor at the Royal Academy. During this period, he also began developing his own occult philosophy, leading to the creation of his first grimoire, 'Earth Inferno' (1905), which explored ideas of earthly suffering. His artistic and esoteric interests converged, leading to a brief but significant involvement with Aleister Crowley and his magical order, the A∴A∴, though Spare ultimately found Crowley's methods too structured.

Spare's most significant contributions to occultism lie in his development of unique magical techniques. He pioneered automatic drawing and writing as methods to bypass the conscious mind and access deeper psychological states, believing this connection was crucial for magical efficacy. His concept of sigilization, the creation of symbolic talismans charged with intent, became a cornerstone of his magical system and a major influence on later occult movements. Spare theorized a dynamic relationship between the conscious ('Kia') and the unconscious ('Zos') aspects of the self, viewing their interplay as fundamental to both artistic creation and magical manifestation. His writings, such as 'The Book of Pleasure' (1913), elaborated on these ideas, advocating for the liberation of subconscious desires and energies.

Throughout his life, Spare experienced fluctuating levels of recognition and financial stability, often living in working-class areas of South London. He continued to exhibit his art, and the emergence of Surrealism in the 1930s brought renewed critical interest, with his work being seen as a precursor to the movement. Despite losing his home during the Blitz and experiencing a period of relative obscurity after World War II, he continued to create and exhibit until his death in 1956. Spare's influence persisted through friends and followers, notably Kenneth Grant, and his sigilization techniques became a foundational element for the chaos magic movement and groups like Thee Temple ov Psychick Youth. His art experienced a significant resurgence in popularity from the 1970s onwards, coinciding with a renewed appreciation for Art Nouveau.
