Ian Watson, born in St Albans, England, on April 20, 1943, was a British author primarily recognized for his contributions to science fiction. After a brief stint as an accounts clerk, Watson pursued higher education, earning degrees in English Literature from Balliol College, Oxford. His early career involved lecturing in English in Tanzania and Tokyo, followed by a period teaching Future Studies at Birmingham Polytechnic. By 1976, he transitioned to a full-time writing career.

Watson was a prolific creator, authoring over two dozen novels and numerous short story collections. His debut novel, 'The Embedding' (1973), received the Prix Apollo and was noted for its basis in generative grammar. Other significant works include 'The Jonah Kit,' which won the BSFA Award for Best Novel in 1977, and collaborations such as 'Under Heaven's Bridge' with Michael Bishop. His writing spanned various themes and was published in numerous anthologies and magazines. Watson also contributed to the Warhammer 40,000 universe and is credited with the screen story for 'A.I. Artificial Intelligence.' He passed away in Gijón, Spain, on April 13, 2026.
