Born in Leeds, England, on June 11, 1968, Justina Robson pursued studies in philosophy and linguistics at the University of York. Before dedicating herself to writing full-time, she held various positions, including secretary, technical writer, and fitness instructor. Robson's early publication was in the British magazine The Third Alternative in 1994, though she gained wider recognition as a novelist.

Physical interaction with 'Stuff' can lead to one's intellect bleeding into the Unity, potentially causing consciousness translation unless resisted by strong minds or undertaken voluntarily. The Unity has also facilitated the creation of 'sidebar' pocket realities, akin to virtual worlds, negotiated with human inhabitants and maintained by Unity-created mechanisms.
