Arthur Michell Ransome

Arthur Michell Ransome (1884–1967) was an English author and journalist celebrated for his "Swallows and Amazons" series of children's books. These stories, set in locations like the Lake District and Norfolk Broads, continue to inspire tourism and remain widely in print. Beyond his popular children's literature, Ransome also chronicled London's literary circles and the tumultuous period of the Russian Revolutions of 1917, both before and after their occurrence. His interactions with revolutionary leaders led to him providing information to British intelligence services, while concurrently facing suspicion from MI5 regarding potential Soviet espionage.

Ransome's early life included periods of study in Leeds and Windermere, though his formal education at Rugby School and Yorkshire College was marked by challenges due to poor eyesight and academic struggles. He moved to London to pursue a writing career, taking on various editorial roles and contributing to the city's literary scene. His early published works included children's nature books and a notable study of London's Bohemian communities. Ransome's personal life involved a difficult first marriage, divorce, and later remarriage to Evgenia Petrovna Shelepina, who had been Trotsky's secretary. His career as a foreign correspondent in Russia during the revolutionary period significantly shaped his later writing and personal entanglements.

Ransome's career as a foreign correspondent took him to Russia, where he covered the revolutions of 1917 and developed close relationships with prominent Bolshevik figures such as Lenin and Trotsky. This proximity led him to provide intelligence to the British Secret Intelligence Service, earning him the code name S.76. Despite his cooperation with British officials, he was also viewed with suspicion by MI5, who investigated him as a potential Soviet spy. Ransome maintained that his access to Bolshevik leadership was crucial for his reporting, and he expressed indignation when asked to submit his work for approval by the Foreign Office. His role in facilitating a secret armistice proposal between Estonia and the Bolsheviks further illustrates the complex and often risky nature of his activities during this period.

Before achieving fame with his children's books, Ransome engaged in various literary endeavors. He began his writing career in London, working in publishing and editing while immersing himself in the city's artistic and literary circles. His early publications included "Bohemia in London" (1907), which explored the capital's artistic communities, and "The Nature Books for Children." Ransome also wrote biographical and critical works on authors like Edgar Allan Poe and Oscar Wilde, though the latter involved him in a protracted libel suit. He contributed to "The Observer" as a reviewer of detective fiction under the pseudonym William Blunt. His personal life was marked by a challenging first marriage and subsequent divorce before he married Evgenia Shelepina.
