Born May 26, 1977, Je'Caryous Johnson is an American producer, author, playwright, and director recognized for his work in urban theater. He gained prominence by adapting popular urban novels and classic films into successful stage plays. Johnson's career began with collaborations on works like Michael Baisden's 'Men Cry in the Dark' and Eric Jerome Dickey's 'Friends and Lovers.' He has since adapted numerous films for the stage, including 'Two Can Play That Game,' 'Set It Off,' and 'New Jack City,' often featuring a consistent ensemble of actors. His production company, initially I'm Ready Productions and later Je'Caryous Johnson Entertainment, has also expanded into producing concerts and comedy shows. Johnson is a recipient of the NAACP Trailblazer Award, acknowledging his significant contributions to theater. He has also authored urban fiction novels and is involved in charitable work through the I'm Ready Foundation.

Je'Caryous Johnson, born in Houston, Texas, developed an early passion for theater, attending the James D. Burrus Magnet School for Fine Arts. His talent was recognized through multiple nationwide playwriting contests. After obtaining a Bachelor of Fine Arts in theater from the University of Houston, he honed his skills under notable figures like August Wilson. Returning to Texas, Johnson co-founded I'm Ready Productions in 1995. His breakthrough in adapting urban narratives came in 2002 with the stage version of Michael Baisden's 'Men Cry in the Dark.' This success paved the way for further adaptations of popular urban novels, including Eric Jerome Dickey's 'Friends and Lovers,' establishing his reputation for bringing contemporary literature to the stage.

Johnson's innovative approach to urban theater garnered significant recognition, including the NAACP Trailblazer Award in 2007, shared with his uncle Gary Guidry. This award celebrated their impact on the entertainment industry and their role in advancing opportunities for future artists. He successfully translated titles like 'Two Can Play That Game' and, through a collaboration with Warner Bros. Theater Ventures, brought 'Set It Off' and 'New Jack City' to the stage, often casting actors from the original films or those closely associated with the genre. Johnson has also ventured into developing musicals, including a project based on the group Destiny's Child and a biographical musical about Marvin Gaye, though some projects have faced delays. More recently, he has launched stage tours for 'New Jack City' and a musical production celebrating Rick James, indicating a continued engagement with bringing iconic urban entertainment to live audiences.
