Anton Szandor LaVey, born Howard Stanton Levey, was an American writer, musician, and occultist best known as the founder of the Church of Satan and the philosophy of LaVeyan Satanism. LaVey cultivated a public persona described by observers as a "born showman" with considerable personal magnetism, earning nicknames like "The Black Pope."
