Robert Francis Kennedy Jr., born in 1954, is a member of the prominent Kennedy family, son of Robert F. Kennedy and nephew of John F. Kennedy. He pursued a career in environmental law, working with organizations like Riverkeeper and the Natural Resources Defense Council, and founded the Waterkeeper Alliance. He also served as an adjunct professor and founded an environmental litigation clinic at Pace University.

Kennedy's career also includes a period as an assistant district attorney and later involvement in politics. He ran for president in 2024 as an independent. More recently, he has become known for promoting vaccine misinformation and conspiracy theories, leading to significant criticism, particularly regarding his role in the anti-vaccine movement and his appointment as Secretary of Health and Human Services in 2025.

Early Life and Education

Born in 1954, Robert Francis Kennedy Jr. is the son of Senator Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Skakel, and nephew to President John F. Kennedy and Senator Ted Kennedy. He experienced significant personal tragedy early in life, with the assassinations of his uncle in 1963 and his father in 1968. These events, coupled with struggles with drug abuse in his youth, including heroin and cocaine use, led to arrests and expulsion from boarding schools. He attended Harvard University, graduating in 1976 with a degree in American history and literature, and later earned a Juris Doctor from the University of Virginia School of Law and a Master of Laws from Pace University.

Environmental Law Career

Kennedy began his legal career as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan before shifting his focus to environmental protection in the mid-1980s. He became involved with Riverkeeper, where he served as senior attorney and litigated numerous environmental enforcement lawsuits. He also founded the Waterkeeper Alliance in 1999, an international organization dedicated to clean water. Additionally, he established the Environmental Litigation Clinic at Pace University School of Law in 1987, supervising students in cases against polluters and creating a model for similar clinics nationwide. His work established significant environmental legal standards and led to numerous settlements and cleanups.

Political and Public Health Stance

In his political endeavors, Kennedy ran as a Democrat and later as an independent in the 2024 presidential election. He has also become a prominent figure in promoting vaccine misinformation and public health conspiracy theories, including claims about chemtrails and a link between vaccines and autism. He founded Children's Health Defense, an anti-vaccine advocacy group. His views have drawn widespread criticism, especially for potentially fueling vaccine hesitancy during outbreaks. In 2025, he was confirmed as the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, a tenure marked by considerable controversy and opposition from scientific and medical communities.
