Andover High School, a former Michigan institution, had a notable history of academic achievement and athletic success.

Andover High School was a public educational institution located in Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Michigan, serving the Greater Detroit area as part of the Bloomfield Hills School District. Originally established in 1931 as Bloomfield Hills High School on land donated by George Gough Booth, it underwent a relocation and renaming process. In 1955, it moved to a new site on Andover Road, and in 1967, it was renamed Andover High School when a second district school, Lahser, was established. The school consistently demonstrated strong academic performance, with over 98% of its graduates pursuing higher education and an average SAT score exceeding the national average. Andover also celebrated significant athletic achievements, securing numerous state championships across various sports including soccer, track, golf, tennis, and swimming and diving. The school's journey concluded when it merged with Lahser High School in 2013 to form the new Bloomfield Hills High School, which commenced operations in the fall of 2015 on the former Andover campus.

Beyond academics and sports, Andover High School fostered a vibrant student life, evidenced by its award-winning student newspaper, The Andover Shield, which garnered multiple accolades. The school's alumni have gone on to achieve notable success in diverse fields, including academia, law, public service, journalism, and the arts. Two alumni were recognized with the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship for their academic excellence, and another received the Goldwater Scholarship for scientific achievement, underscoring the institution's role in nurturing accomplished individuals.

Historical Development

Andover High School began its existence in the autumn of 1931 under the name Bloomfield Hills High School, situated on Vaughan Road. The land for the school was a donation from George Gough Booth. The initial graduating class in 1936 comprised only eight students. As the local population grew, a larger facility became necessary, leading to a move in 1955 to a new location on Andover Road. Further expansion needs resulted in the construction of an additional school. In 1967, with the opening of a second high school named Lahser, the original school was renamed Andover High School. This dual-school system persisted until 2013, when Andover and Lahser merged to create the unified Bloomfield Hills High School, which began operations in the fall of 2015 at the former Andover site.

Academic and Extracurricular Achievements

Academically, Andover High School maintained a high standard, with an impressive college matriculation rate exceeding 98% and a graduation rate of approximately 97%. Students consistently achieved SAT scores above the national average, with an average score of 1233 out of 1600. The school's commitment to academic excellence was further highlighted by notable alumni achievements: Wen Shi and Abdul El-Sayed were recipients of the Rhodes Scholarship, and Andrew Zureick earned the Goldwater Scholarship for his scientific accomplishments. The school also boasted an award-winning student newspaper, The Andover Shield, which received numerous honors, including a Spartan award in 2007, reflecting strong student journalism.

Athletic Prowess

Andover High School's athletic programs achieved considerable success, accumulating numerous state championships across a variety of sports. The Men's Soccer team secured a state title in 1978. The track and field program was dominant, winning state championships in 1938, 1939, and 1948. Golfers brought home state championships in 1980 and 1992, while the Men's Tennis team achieved victories in 1997, 2002, 2004, and 2005. The swimming and diving teams demonstrated exceptional strength, with the Men's team winning multiple titles from 1986 to 1997, and the Women's team achieving success in the early 1980s and again in 1986.
