The Hadharem are an Arab group from Yemen with a long history of seafaring, trade, and diaspora, primarily following Sunni Islam.

The Hadharem are an Arab ethnographic group originating from the Hadhramaut region in what is now Yemen, with a history stretching back to ancient seafaring and trading traditions. Initially influenced by various faiths, they converted to Islam during the time of Prophet Muhammad, later adopting Ibadi Islam before settling into Sunni Islam, specifically the Shafi'i school, by 951 AD. Their culture and language, Hadhrami Arabic, have spread widely due to a significant diaspora.

Historically, Hadharem families emigrated across the Indian Ocean basin, including the Horn of Africa, Swahili Coast, India, and Southeast Asia. This diaspora was driven by a long seafaring and trading tradition that predates even Semitic cultures, though their influence was eventually overshadowed by groups like the Sabaeans. Today, Hadhrami communities can be found in various parts of the Arabian Peninsula, East Africa, and among specific groups in South Asia and Southeast Asia, reflecting their extensive historical reach and influence.

Origins and Religious Affiliation

The Hadharem are an Arab ethnographic group indigenous to the Hadhramaut region, a territory now encompassing parts of Yemen, southern Oman, and southern Saudi Arabia. Their historical connection to the region is deep, with a conversion to Islam occurring during the era of Prophet Muhammad. Initially, they were introduced to Ibadi Islam in the mid-eighth century by a religious leader from Iraq. However, by 951 AD, Hadhramaut came under Sunni dominion, and the Hadharem have predominantly followed Sunni Islam, adhering to the Shafi'i school of jurisprudence, to this day. The Hadharem speak Hadhrami Arabic, a distinct dialect of Arabic, though those in diaspora often adopt the languages of their adopted homes.

Seafaring Traditions and Diaspora

The Hadharem possess a profound and ancient seafaring and trading legacy, one that predates many known Semitic cultures. This maritime tradition led to significant emigration, particularly around the Indian Ocean basin, following the rise of the Sabaeans who eventually overshadowed Hadramite influence. Hadhrami families established communities in diverse locations such as the Horn of Africa, the Swahili Coast, the Malabar Coast of India, Hyderabad in South India, Sri Lanka, and Maritime Southeast Asia. By the mid-1930s, the Hadhrami diaspora numbered an estimated 110,000 individuals, representing a substantial portion of the total Hadhrami population. This extensive migration highlights their historical role as traders and travelers across vast distances.

Hadhrami Communities Across the Globe

The Hadhrami diaspora has resulted in established communities across various continents. Within the Arabian Peninsula, Hadhrami settlements are found in western Yemen and the trading ports of the Persian Gulf, with individuals historically serving as money changers in Jeddah. In East Africa, they have a long-standing presence in the Horn of Africa (Djibouti, Ethiopia, Somalia) and are notable within the Harari population. Hadhrami settlers played a role in consolidating Muslim communities in coastal Somalia and were recruited into Somali Sultanate armies. Beyond East Africa, Hadhrami communities are also reported in Mozambique, Comoros, and Madagascar. Furthermore, specific groups like the Hadhrami Jews, though now largely residing in Israel, also represent a facet of this diaspora. Various communities in India, such as the Nawayath and Chaush, and in Southeast Asia, like Arab Filipinos and Indonesians, also trace partial or significant Hadhrami ancestry.
